Let \(X\) be a Klein surface, the quotient of the upper half-plane by a finitely generated Fuchsian group of the second kind. Let \(p\) be the genus of the doubling of \(X\). The maximal order of an automorphism of \(X\) is \(2p\) \((p\) odd) or \(2(p+1)\) \((p\) even). The authors consider the \(X\) for which elements of these orders exist and classify them. Since Klein surfaces can be regarded as Riemann surfaces with a real structure the authors give, in most cases, a description of the surfaces as Klein surfaces of curves defined over the reals.
