A linear transformation on a Banach space \(E\) is called a generalized backward shift if (i) \(\text{Dim Ker }T=1\), (ii) the canonical transformation induced on the quotient space \(E/\text{Ker }T\) is an isometry, and (iii) \(\text{Cup Ker }T^n\) is a dense subspace of \(E\). With this definition it is shown that if \(X\) is an infinite compact Hausdorff space and \(E\) is a Banach space with a strictly convex dual, then the Banach space \(C(X,E)\) of continuous \(E\)-valued functions \(X\) does not admit a generalized backward shift. It is conjectured that the strict convexity condition is not necessary. It is also shown that if \(E\) admits a generalized backward shift and if \(X\) is finite, then \(C(X,E)\) also admits a generalized backward shift.
