By elementary methods the authors prove that for each \(w>0\) and for each \(p,q\geq 3\) such that \(1/p+1/q\leq 1/2\) there exists an orientably regular map with valence \(q\), face size \(p\), and planar width at least \(w\) (which means that each non-contractible simple closed curve on the surface of the map meets the 1-skeleton of the map in at least \(w\) points).
