In this paper the author considers the anti-self-dual Yang-Mills (ASDYM) equation on the noncommutative \({\mathbb R}^4\). The latter is characterized by the commutation relations \([x_j,x_k] = i \theta_{jk}\) of the space-time coordinates, where the \(\theta_{jk}\) are real constants. The basic idea of the construction is to replace the ordinary product with the *-product \[ f*g(x) = \exp\left( \sum_{j,k=1}^4 {i \over 2} \theta_{jk} \partial_{x_j} \partial_{\tilde{x}_k}\right) f(x)g(\tilde{x})\Bigg|_{\tilde{x}=x} \] of functions \(f\) and \(g\) on space-time. It turns out that many properties of the ordinary ASDYM equation carry over (almost) without any changes, by this substitution rule. This concerns in particular the twistorial interpretation (with a noncommutative twistor space) and integrability properties. Essential differences arise where the commutative scheme uses finite dimensional linear algebra which has to be replaced by infinite dimensional structures in the noncommutative framework. A typical example is the Ward Ansatz; a noncommutative generalization is not known in this case. The paper ends with a discussion of the PCF model and Hitchin's Higgs pair equations [\textit{N. J. Hitchin}, Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 55, 59-126 (1987; Zbl 0634.53045)] as dimensional reductions of the ASDYM equations.
