In this paper, a wavelet basis of compactly supported \(C^1\)-functions on the sphere is constructed with the help of a multiresolution analysis. By a parameterization of the sphere, the problem is reduced to the problem of constructing appropriate wavelets on the square \([0,1]^2\), which need to satisfy suitable side-conditions. The author uses tensor products where one component is an exponential spline and the other component is an interval spline wavelet. The approach presented allows the construction of stable wavelet bases by applying the lifting scheme to an initial stable completion.
