If \(K\) is an algebraic number field of degree \(n\) then a power integral basis is an integral basis of the form \(\{1,\alpha,\alpha^2,\ldots,\alpha^{n-1}\}\). If such an \(\alpha\) exists, then \(\mathbb{Z}[\alpha]\) is just the ring of integers of \(K\). Power integral bases in prime cyclotomic fields were considered by \textit{A. Bremner} [J. Number Theory 28, No. 3, 288-298 (1988; Zbl 0637.12001)] and the author [J. Number Theory 69, No. 1, 98-118 (1998; Zbl 0923.11150)]. In this paper the author considers very carefully cyclotomic fields \(K\) generated by a primitive \(2^m\)th root of unity \(\zeta\). In the main result it is shown that up to equivalence (translation by elements of \(\mathbb{Z}\) and multiplication by \(\pm 1\)) the only generatos of power integral bases in \(K\) are \(\zeta^i\) for odd \(i\in \mathbb{Z}\). This is the first example of number fields of degree \(\geq 23\) where all power integral bases are known. Moreover, the result gives a complete characterization of power integral bases in an infinite family of number fields of unbounded degrees.
