Here, nonlinear boundary eigenvalue problems \[ u''(t) + \lambda_n a(t) u(t) = f(t,u(t)) = 0 \] on \((0,1)\) with Dirichlet boundary conditions are considered; \(\lambda_n\) is the \(n\)th eigenvalue of the corresponding linear problem, \(a\) is a nonnegative function which may be singular in \(0\) and \(1\), and \(f\) is a Carathéodory function with some additional property. The author first proves that the operator corresponding to the linear problem has a compact resolvent and all eigenspaces are one-dimensional. The main part concerns existence results for nonresonant nonlinear boundary value problems as above and existence results in the case when \(n=1\) and the nonlinearity \(f\) lies asymptotically below \(0\).
