The authors derive a general analysis for the discrete variational equation along an orbit which converges to a critical point. Moreover they study the rate of convergence for a general map with a simple eigenvalue. The solutions of the variational equations are also of importance for further global analysis near the orbit. The polynomial rate is derived for both the orbit and the solutions of the variational equation. The authors show how these results can be applied to the study of discrete saddle-node homoclinics.
