This paper establishes the familiar equivalence of the following three properties for automorphic cuspidal representations on a reductive group \(G\): being distinguished with respect to a certain subgroup \(H\), and a certain character, having a pole for a certain \(L\)-function, and having a nontrivial lift to another group \(R\). The main case studied by the authors is \((G,R)= (GSp_3,G_2)\). The authors build on ground work laid down in references [\textit{D. Ginzburg, S. Rallis} and \textit{D. Soudry}, Isr. J. Math. 100, 61-116 (1997; Zbl 0881.11050), Duke Math. J. 88, 537-624 (1997; Zbl 0881.11051)]. The authors consider generic, cuspidal representations \(\pi\) on \(GSp_3\), and the lift to \(G_2\) is by means of the theta correspondence, obtained by considering the minimal representation of \(GE_7\), restricted to the dual pair \(GSp_3\times G_2\). The corresponding (partial) \(L\)-function is the Spin(7) \(L\)-function of \(\pi\), and the pole is taken at \(s=1\). Having this pole characterizes the fact that the theta lift of \(\pi\) to \(G_2\) is nontrivial. In this case \(\pi\) is distinguished with respect to the subgroup \(H\) of the standard parabolic subgroup of \(GSp_3\), which preserves a two-dimensional isotropic subspace. \(H\) is the semidirect product of the unipotent radical and the image of the diagonal embedding of \(GL_2\) inside the Levi part. The character of \(H\) is trivial on the reductive part of \(H\) and on the unipotent part it is \(\psi(\text{tr}(x))\), where we write such a unipotent element as a \(3\times 3\) matrix of \(2\times 2\) blocks, and \(x\) is the \((1,2)\) block. Here \(\psi\) is a fixed nontrivial character of the adele ring, trivial on the principal adeles. Conversely, being distinguished with respect to \(H\) and the character above implies that \(\pi\) has a nontrivial theta lift to \(G_2\). Moreover, the authors show that \(\theta(\pi)\) is then generic, and they write a formula relating the (generalized) period of \(\pi\) with respect to \(H\) and the character above with the Whittaker coefficient of \(\theta(\pi)\). The authors also consider briefly an analogous set up for generic cuspidal representations \(\sigma\) on \(G_2\), which have a nontrivial theta lift to \(PGL_3\), via the minimal representation of \(PE_6\). Here the pole condition is at \(s=1\) for the standard \(L\)-function of \(\sigma\). The period subgroup is a certain semidirect product of \(SL_2\) and a certain three-dimensional unipotent subgroup. Finally, the authors construct residual Eisenstein series on \(F_4\), coming off a cuspidal representation \(\tau\) on \(GSp_3\), which is distinguished with respect to \[ H= \{(g_1,g_2,g_3)\in GL_2^3\mid \det g_1=\det g_2=\det g_3\}. \] Existence of this period for \(\tau\) implies the existence of the residue. The authors then write a formula relating the Spin(8) of the residue with the \(H\) period of \(\tau\).
