This short note describes without proofs some classes of automaton groups and semigroups (in the sense of \textit{V. M. Glushkov} [Russ. Math. Surv. 16, No. 5, 1--53 (1961); translation from Usp. Mat. Nauk 16, No. 5, 3-62 (1961; Zbl 0104.35404)]) and their application to dynamical systems defined by homeomorphisms of the Cantor set. In addition to the references, material on algebraic properties of the group of automorphisms of a shift of finite type may be found in the paper of \textit{M. Boyle}, \textit{D. Lind} and \textit{D. Rudolph} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 306, 71--114 (1988; Zbl 0664.28006)].
