The method of \textit{Z. Kovarik} [SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 7, No.~3, 386-389 (1970; Zbl 0217.21501)] for the approximate orthogonaliztion of a finite set of linearly independent vectors from a real or complex Hilbert space is generalized to the case of rows or columns of an arbitrary rectangular matrix. It is proved that both rows and columns of the matrix are transformed to vectors which are quasi-orthogonal in a certain sense.
