Given \(a,b>0\), define the operators \(U_{ma,nb}, m,n \in Z,\) on \(L^2(R)\) by \(( U_{ma,nb}f)(x)=e^{2\pi imax}g(x-nb)\). A subspace \(V\) of \(L^2(R)\) is cyclic with respect to this family if there exists \(f\in V\) such that \(V= \overline{\text{span}} \{U_{ma,nb}f\}_{m,n\in Z}\). It is proved that for each cyclic space \(V\), there exists a function \(g\in V\) such that \(\{U_{ma,nb}g\}_{m,n\in Z}\) is a frame for \(V\). More general results are actually proved for what the authors call group-like unitary systems. Let \(E\subseteq R\) be a measurable set and assume that \(L^2(E)\) is invariant under the operators \(\{U_{ma,nb}\}_{m,n\in Z}\). Equivalent conditions for the existence of a measurable set \(F\subseteq E\) such that \(\{U_{ma,nb}\chi_F\}_{m,n\in Z}\) is a frame for \(L^2(E)\) are given. Another interesting result shows that if (i) \(ab \leq 1\), (ii) \(\{U_{ma,nb}f\}_{m,n\in Z}\) is a frame sequence (i.e., a frame for its closed linear span,) and (iii) \(P\) denotes the orthogonal projection onto this space, then there exists \(h\in L^2(R)\) such that \(Ph=f\) and \( \{U_{ma,nb}h\}_{m,n\in Z}\) is a frame for \(L^2(R)\).
