Let \(M\), \(M_{1}\) and \(M_{2}\) be oriented 3-manifolds. The Homflypt skein module of \(M\) is denoted by \(S(M)\) and we shall write \(M_{1}\#M_{2}\) for the connected sum of \(M_{1}\) and \(M_{2}\). The main result of the paper is that \(S(M_{1}\#M_{2})\) is isomorphic to \(S(M_{1})\otimes S(M_{2})\) if the skein modules are considered over a certain localized ring. As a corollary the authors obtain that \(S(\#^{m}S^{1}\times S^{2})\) is a free module generated by the empty link. This allows to define a ``Homflypt rational function'' for oriented framed links in \(\#^{m}S^{1}\times S^{2}\).
