An example of ancient mathematics (the area of a spiral) is mentioned by using techniques from Archimedes' paper ''The method''. Further a number of related exercises (with answers) are proposed and inaccuracies and misconceptions written about the history of Greek mathematics are pointed out. The aarticle also provides a modern translation of the main result proved in the paper.
