In the present paper, the author gives a new characterization of Lusztig's canonical quotient. This group plays an important rôle in the classification of unipotent representations of finite groups of Lie type and it is a finite group attached to each special nilpotent orbit of a complex semisimple Lie algebra [\textit{G. Lusztig}, Characters of reductive groups over a finite field, Ann. Math. Stud., 107, Princeton Univ. Press, Princeton, NJ (1984; Zbl 0556.20033)]. The author gives here a new definition using a description of the component group of a nilpotent element, he gave in his earlier paper [\textit{E. Sommers}, Int. Math. Res. Not. 1998, No. 11, 539-562 (1998; Zbl 0909.22014)] and makes also use of Spaltenstein duality and the dimension of a Springer fibre. Moreover, the author defines a surjective map from the set of pairs consisting of a nilpotent orbit and a conjugacy class in its fundamental group to the set of nilpotent orbits in the Langlands dual Lie algebra. This map is related to one introduced by Lusztig and studied in [\textit{N. Spaltenstein}, Classes unipotentes et sous-groupes de Borel. Lecture Notes in Mathematics 946, Springer-Verlag (1982; Zbl 0486.20025)].
