Let \(K\) be a finite field. A \(K\)-{group shift} is a proper closed shift invariant subgroup of \(K^{{\mathbb Z}^2}\) (considered as an additive group) which is closed under scalar multiplication by elements of \(K\). A map \(\theta\) between a \(K\)-group shift and a \(K'\)-group shift is called {affine} if it can be written \(\theta = L + c\) where \(L\) is a continuous shift commuting group homomorphism and \(c\in K'\). The main result of the paper is the following: if \(M\) is a \(K\)-group shift then mixing is a necessary and sufficient condition on \(M\) for all codes from it into another \(K'\)-group shift to be affine; mixing is a necessary and sufficient condition on \(M\) for all codes from another \(K'\)-group shift into it to be affine. As a consequence, it follows that for \(K={\mathbb Z}_p\), two mixing shifts are topologically conjugate if and only if they are equal.
