This very important and useful publication addresses the problem of designing stabilizing output feedback controllers for a class of nonlinear seismically excited base isolated structures with unknown parametric uncertainties. Two types (non-adaptive and adaptive) of sliding mode controllers are presented. In both schemes, only the information on the displacements and velocities of the base and first floor is used in the controller design. Main result: The dynamical behaviour of the system is described by a mathematical model composed of two coupled subsystems, namely, the main structure subsystem and the controlled base isolation subsystem, which are described by a set of second-order differential equations. Finally, a numerical example is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.
