The simple modules of the Witt algebra \(W(1)\) were classified by \textit{H. J. Chang} [Abh. Math. Semin. Univ. Hamb. 14, 151-184 (1941; Zbl 0025.24202)]. In the article under review the authors achieve the same result with a simpler proof, in which they establish a lemma to reduce the central characters into their simplest forms by means of automorphisms of \(W(1)\) and get a simple criterion for the simplicity of induced modules.
