Let \(R\) be a Noetherian PI ring and let \(I\) be a two-sided ideal of \(R\) which is a generator as a right \(R\)-module. Thus \(I^*I=R\) where \(I^*=\Hom(I_R,R_R)\). It is shown that \(I\) is projective as a right \(R\)-module and satisfies the left Artin-Rees property, and that if \(R\) is also semi-prime then \(I\) is invertible. These results extend several known ones and have important consequences. The crux of the proof is to show that \(I\) is invertible in the prime case, and this is done using trace rings. One consequence is that if \(R\) is semi-prime and \(f\) is a ring-endomorphism of \(R\) which acts as the identity function on the centre of \(R\) then \(f\) is an automorphism of \(R\). Also if \(R\) is semi-prime then a two-sided ideal of \(R\) is stably free as a right \(R\)-module if and only if it is stably free as a left \(R\)-module (and in either case it is invertible). Going in some sense in the opposite direction, results are proved about two-sided ideals of \(R\) which are projective on one side. The results of this paper are impressive and particularly interesting because of their generality.
