Characteristic tilting modules are constructed for a special class of quasi-hereditary algebras, the dual extensions of directed monomial algebras. The case of dual extensions of hereditary algebras is investigated in more detail; here, the dual extensions are shown to be algebras of global dimension two, with triangular decomposition and with bipartite quivers.
