Starting from the intermediate value theorem for scalar functions, the author develops in this very nice survey a progressive existence theory for compact vector fields in Hilbert spaces, monotone operators in reflexive Banach spaces, and accretive operators in Banach spaces with single-valued duality map. The paper even contains some new results, such as the following ``invariance of domain'' theorem: Let \(G\) be an open subset of a reflexive real Banach space \(X\) and \(T: G\to X^*\) a demicontinuous, locally closed, locally injective, and locally monotone operator. Then \(T(G)\) is open in \(X^*\).
