A vertex operator algebra (VOA) \(V\) is said to be \(C_2\) co-finite if the subspace \(\{u_{2}v:u,v\in V\}\) has finite codimension. This condition is also known as the \(C_2\) condition and has many important consequences in the theory of VOAs. For instance, it is one of the main assumptions in Zhu's proof of the modular invariance of certain trace functions [\textit{Y. Zhu}, J. Am. Math. Soc. 9, 237--302 (1996; Zbl 0854.17034)]. In recent work [Commun. Math. Phys. 238, 305--331 (2003; Zbl 1042.17025)] \textit{M. Gaberdiel} and \textit{A. Neitzke} found new applications of the \(C_2\) condition. They showed that any \(C_2\) co-finite VOA is spanned by certain sets of vectors that satisfy a no repeat condition. As a consequence, they proved that \(C_2\) co-finiteness implies \(C_n\) co-finiteness for \(n\geq 2\) and that the fusion rules for irreducible modules are finite. In the paper under review the author develops an analogous spanning set method for modules of \(C_2\) co-finite VOAs. Using this method, the author extends the results of Gaberdiel and Neitzke to modules. In particular, he shows that if \(M\) is a finitely generated weak module then the \(n\)-th Zhu algebra \(A_n(M)\) is finite-dimensional and \(C_n(M)\) is co-finite dimensional. Recently, \textit{T. Abe}, the author and \textit{C. Dong} (see http://arxiv.org/abs/math.QA/0204021) used the module spanning set obtained in the paper under review to show that for VOAs of CFT type, rationality and \(C_2\) co-finiteness together are equivalent to regularity.
