Let \(G\) be a finite group and \(\mathbb{F}\) be a field of finite characteristic \(p\). The ordinary cohomology of groups depends only on the principal block of the group ring. \textit{M. Linckelmann} gave [Algebr. Represent. Theory 2, No. 2, 107-135 (1999; Zbl 0934.16010)] a well working definition of the group cohomology \(H^*(G,b)\) of a block \(b\) of a group ring. Moreover, Linckelmann showed there that there is an injective ring homomorphism \(\gamma_b\) from the group cohomology of the block to the Hochschild cohomology of the block. The main result of the paper under review is the fact that if \(G\) has a normal Sylow \(p\)-subgroup \(P\) and if for any non-trivial element \(k\) in \(P\cdot C_G(P)\) one has that the centralizer of \(k\) in \(G\) is again in \(P\cdot C_G(P)\), then for any block \(B\) of \(\mathbb{F} G\) one has that \(\gamma_B\) induces an isomorphism modulo the radicals of the cohomology rings. This applies to blocks of cyclic defect for any group, to nilpotent groups \(G\) or to Frobenius groups where \(p\) divides the order of the Frobenius kernel. As a second result the authors show that for blocks of maximal defect the Hochschild cohomology modulo the images of co-restrictions from proper subgroups of \(P\) is isomorphic to the fixed points under \(N_G(b)\) of the tensor product of the group cohomology ring modulo proper co-restrictions with the group ring of the center of \(P\) for \(b\) being a block of \(PC_G(P)\) covered by \(B\). As a consequence, the block cohomology of a finite group with defect being an elementary Abelian Sylow subgroup \(P\) is isomorphic, modulo radicals, to the Hochschild cohomology modulo the images of transfers of proper subgroups of \(P\).
