The two-dimensional partial difference system \[ \begin{cases} T(\nabla_1,\nabla_2)(x_{mn})+b_{mn}g(y_{mn})=0,\\ T(\Delta _1,\Delta _2)(y_{mn})+a_{mn}f(x_{mn})=0 \end{cases} \tag{*} \] is considered. Here \(\nabla_{1,2}\) and \(\Delta_{1,2}\) denote the backward and forward difference operators with respect to the first and second variables \(m,n\), respectively, e.g. \(\nabla_2 x_{m,n}=x_{m,n-1}-x_{m,n}\), and \(T(\Delta _1,\Delta _2)= \Delta _1+\Delta _2+I\), \(T(\nabla _1,\nabla _2)= \nabla _1+\nabla _2+I\), \(I\) being the identity operator. Conditions (rather complex) on the double sequences \(a,b\) and the nonlinearities \(f,g\) are given which guarantee that (*) possesses no solution which is eventually of one sign for large \(m,n\). These results are proved using a variant of the Riccati technique which eliminates the existence of eventually positive and negative solutions. Two examples illustrate the theoretical results of the paper.
