The author [\textit{D. N. Yetter}, Contemp. Math. 230, 117-134 (1998; Zbl 0927.18003)] has shown that the reach of \textit{M. Gerstenhaber}'s deformation theory of associative algebras [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 79, 59-103 (1964; Zbl 0123.03101)] is again present in deformation theory for monoidal categories and related deformation theories for monoidal functors and braided monoidal categories. In the present paper the author solidifies the analogy between lax monoidal functors and associative algebras by showing that some categories of functors with an action of a lax monoidal functor are abelian categories. Furthermore, it follows that the cohomology of a monoidal functor \(F\) with coefficients in an \((F,F)\)-bimodule is given by right derived functors.
