The main result of the paper is the following. Let \(F\) be a homeomorphism on a compact, locally connected metric space \(X\). Let \(A\) be a closed invariant subset of \(X\) (i.e. \(F(A)=A\)) such that \(F|_A\) is topologically conjugate to the shift on \(M\) symbols \(\sigma_M:\Sigma_M\rightarrow \Sigma_M\) via the homeomorphism \(h:A\rightarrow \Sigma_M\). Let \(Q\) be a closed neighbourhood of \(A\) and let \(K=\text{Cl}(\{x\in Q:F^{-n}(x)\in Q\) for any \(n\geq 0\})\). Assume that: (i) \(F(Q)\cap F^{-1}(Q)\subset \text{Int}(Q)\); (ii) if \(x\in Q\) and \(F^k(x)\notin Q\) for some \(k>0\) then \(F^n(x)\notin Q\) for any \(n\geq k\); (iii) if \(x\in Q\setminus A\) then \(F^m(x)\notin Q\) for some integer \(m\). Then \(K\) is in an invariant continuum and there is an indecomposable continuum \(\widetilde{K}\supset \Sigma_M\) such that (a) there is a homeomorphism \(\widetilde{f}\) on \(\widetilde{K}\) extending \(\sigma_M\), (b) there is a continuous onto map \(p:K\rightarrow \widetilde{K}\) extending \(h:A\rightarrow \Sigma_M\), and (c) \(p\circ F|_K=\widetilde{f}\circ p\). Then, in a sense, as stated in the abstract of the paper, ``indescomposability is the vehicle a dynamical system on a locally connected space uses to make the transition from an invariant subset having shift dynamics (thus the subset is quite disconnected) to the `rest' of the space''. The paper also includes some slight variations of the theorem stated above.
