This article deals with fixed-point free continuous maps \(F:B_r(X)\to B_r(X)\), homotopies \(H:S_r(X)\times [0,1]\to S_r(X)\), and retracts \(R:B_r(X)\to S_r(X)\) in infinite dimensional Banach spaces \(X\). The main result is a theorem about the existence of such fixed-point continuous maps, homotopies and retracts whose \(\gamma\)-Lipschitz constants are not large; more precisely, the author gives examples of the corresponding mappings whose \(\gamma\)-Lipschitz constants are estimated above in terms of \(\inf\{\| Fx-x\|: x\in M\}\) (\(M\) is either \(B_r(X)\) or \(S_r(X)\)) and some geometric characteristics of \(X\). Recall that the \(\gamma\)-Lipschitz constant of \(F\) on a set \(M\) is the least real \(c\) such that \(\gamma(F(D))\leq c\gamma(D)\) \((D\subseteq M)\); here \(\gamma\) is a measure of noncompactness; the author considers three measures of noncompactness: Kuratowski \(\alpha\), Hausdorff \(\chi\) and ``lattice'' \(\beta\). The cases of separable and reflexive spaces and spaces containing copies of \(\ell_p\) and \(c_0\) are considered separately. The results of the article are related to investigations of C. Franchetti, B. Nowak, S. Reich and others.
