Let \(C\) be the germ of a reduced plane curve at the origin in \(\mathbb C^2.\) If \(C\) has \(r\) irreducible components, let \(\Delta^C(t_1,\ldots, t_r)\) denote the Alexander polynomial of the link \(C\cap S^3_{\varepsilon}\subset S^3_{\varepsilon}\) for \(\varepsilon>0\) sufficiently small (and corresponding to a fixed choice of order among the \(r\) components of \(C\)). Assuming that \(r\geq 2,\) the authors give the following two expressions for \(\Delta^C(t_1,\ldots, t_r):\) \[ \Delta^C(t_1,\ldots, t_r)=P_C(t_1,\ldots, t_r), \] \[ \Delta^C(t_1,\ldots, t_r)=\sum_{(v_1,\ldots, v_r)} \chi(\mathbb PF_{(v_1,\ldots, v_r)}) t_1^{v_1}\cdots t_r^{v_r}. \] Here, in the first formula, \(P_C\) is the polynomial associated to the generating function of dimensions of the associated graded components of a naturally defined filtration on the ring \({\mathcal O}_C\) of germs of analytic functions on \(C.\) In the second formula, \(F_{(v_1,\ldots, v_r)}\) are certain subspaces of \({\mathbb C}^r\) defined using the same filtration on \({\mathcal O}_C,\) and \(\chi(\mathbb PF_{(v_1,\ldots, v_r)})\) is the Euler characteristic of the projectization of \(F_{(v_1,\ldots, v_r)}.\)
