Compactly epi-Lipschitzian (CEL) sets introduced by \textit{J. M. Borwein} and \textit{H. M. Strojwas} [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl. 9, 1347-1366 (1985; Zbl 0613.49016)] play a significant role in connection with necessary optimality conditions and the stability of mathematical programming problems. In the present paper, the author considers sets of the form \[ C= \{x\in X: g(x)\in A, x\in B\}, \] where \(A\) and \(B\) are closed subsets of Banach spaces \(Y\) and \(X\), respectively, and \(g: X\to Y\) is strongly compactly Lipschitzian in the sense of \textit{A. Jourani} and \textit{L. Thibault} [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl. 24, 229-240 (1995; Zbl 0829.46030)]. Using a result from the latter paper as well as a chain rule from [\textit{A. Jourani} and \textit{L. Thibault}, Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 47, 443-455 (1993; Zbl 0785.58010)], a sufficient condition for \(C\) to be CEL is established. The condition involves Ioffe's approximate subdifferential. As a special case, a sufficient condition is obtained for the intersection of two CEL sets to be a CEL set.
