In dynamical systems theory for autonomous and time-periodic vector fields the knowledge of the stable and unstable manifolds of hyperbolic equilibria or hyperbolic periodic orbits plays a central role in understanding many global dynamical issues. The authors have considered a new aspect of this subject: to develop practically efficient numerical methods for computing the stable and unstable manifolds of hyperbolic trajectories for two-dimensional aperiodically time-dependent vector fields. They suggest two algorithms and compare them with earlier works by \textit{D. G. Dritschel} and \textit{M. H. P. Ambaum} [A contour-advective semi-Lagrangian numerical algorithm for simulating fine-scale conservative dynamical fields, Q. J. Rou. Meteor. Soc. 123, 1097-1130 (1997)] and \textit{D. Hobson} [J. Comput. Phys. 104, 14-22 (1993; Zbl 0768.65025)]. Applications to several aperiodically time-dependent variants of the Duffing equation are given.
