The authors construct regular real selfadjoint approximations for real selfadjoint operators associated with the differential expression of the form \[ \ell(y)= \tfrac {1}{w} [-(py')'+ qy] \] with \(1/p, q, w\in L_{\text{loc}} (I)\), \(w(t)> 0\) a.e. on \(I\), where \(I= (a,b)\), \(-\infty\leq a< b\leq \infty\). If 0 belongs to the resolvent set of the original operator, then the construction guarantees that 0 is a point of the resolvent set of the approximating operators which convergent to the original operator in a general sense of the strong resolvent convergence. Examples illustrate the construction of the approximating operators.
