A Maxwell system is considered with anisotropic coefficients, in the sense that the electric permittivity and the magnetic permeability are described in terms of matrices with non-analytic elements. The unique continuation of the system across non-characteristic surfaces is proved subject to the additional assumption that one matrix is a scalar multiple of the other. The proof uses differential geometry and Carleman estimates.
