The authors consider quadratic eigenvalue problems, separating them into elliptic and hyperbolic ones. Characterisations of both properties are given. The main goal is to compute the smallest perturbation such that this property is lost. The authors formulate algorithms to compute a good approximation, as both sets are not closed. Numerical illustrations are provided.
