The authors are concerned with the size of the set of solutions of a functional equation in relation to the size of the set of approximate solutions to the same equation. In the case of linear equations of a certain type (such as Cauchy or other generalized polynomial equations) or linear inequalities (such as convexity), they show that the sets of solutions are small compared to the respective sets of approximate solutions. For superstable equations such as the exponential equation the results are different. There are a few misprints; for example, the monomial equation should be written \(\Delta _{y}^{n}f(x)-n!f(y)=0\), and the d'Alembert equation is missing a factor of \(2\).
