The author considers the matrix equation \(X^m+A_1X^{m-1}+\ldots +A_m=0\) where the matrices \(A_i\) and \(X\) are complex and \(n\times n\). The author reviews the basic theory of matrix polynomials and the construction of solvents of such equations in terms of the concept of eigenpair. (An eigenpair consists of a Jordan block and of its generalized eigenspace.) Then he studies the number of solvents. In particular, he gives conditions when the number of solvents is infinite. When this number is finite and positive he estimates its minimal and maximal possible values.
