The authors consider second-order quasilinear functional differential equations of the form \[ \left[r(t)| x'(t)| ^{\alpha-1}x'(t)\right]'+F(t, x(t), x(\tau(t)), x'(t), x'(\tau(t)))=0. \] By using the generalized Riccati technique and the averaging technique, some oscillation criteria are obtained for all solutions of the equation to be oscillatory. The idea presented in this paper is similar to that of \textit{Q. Wang} [Appl. Math. Comput. 122, No. 2, 253--266 (2001; Zbl 1030.34031)] for second-order half-linear ordinary differential equations. The obtained criteria can be applied to ordinary, delay, and advance differential equations, and generalize and improve some known results for the first two cases.
