Following the general (co-)homology theory of Quillen-Barr-Beck, the author defines (co-)ho\-mol\-ogy groups for restricted Lie algebras over a field \(k\) of prime characteristic \(p\). This is a categorical approach working with the category \({\mathcal {RL}}ie\) of restricted Lie algebras, the comma category \({\mathcal {RL}}ie/L\) for \(L \in {\mathcal {RL}}ie\), and the category of abelian group objects \(({\mathcal {RL}}ie/L)_{\text{ab}}\). The author shows that the objects in the last category (Beck modules) can be identified with modules for a tensor product of the restricted enveloping algebra with a non-commutative polynomial ring on one generator. Also, of interest are certain homomorphisms over \({\mathcal {RL}}ie/L\) (Beck derivations) which are identified with certain Lie algebra derivations. With these identifications, the author proceeds to make the categorical definitions of (co-) homology groups. The zeroth cohomology group can be identified as a group of Lie algebra derivations. One of the main results of the paper is the identification of the first cohomology group with a set of equivalence classes of \(p\)-extensions of restricted Lie algebras. As such, the zeroth and first cohomology groups correspond respectively to the first and second restricted Lie algebra cohomology groups as defined previously by \textit{B. Pareigis} [Math. Z. 104, 281--336 (1968; Zbl 0162.33701)]. Earlier, \textit{G. Hochschild} [Am. J. Math. 76, 555--580 (1954; Zbl 0055.26505)] gave the first definition of (co-)homology groups for restricted Lie algebras. In degrees greater than two, the cohomology groups of Pareigis agree with those of Hochschild. Another key result of the paper is a universal coefficient theorem which relates (in all degrees) these new homology groups to those of Hochschild via short exact sequences.
