Motivated by earlier work of several authors on particular problems in connection with wavelets, the author studies the abstract construction of global frames in Hilbert space from local ones in quasi-orthogonal families of closed subspaces by means of a certain decomposition technique. In particular, the calculation of associated dual frames is shown to be facilitated by this technique, and a detailed such calculation is carried out for the case of a Gabor frame.
