A Riemannian manifold \(M\) equipped with a Lie group \(G\) of isometries has cohomogeneity \(1\) whenever the principal \(G\)-orbits are of codimension \(1\). Here, the authors deal with such complete cohomogeneity-\(1\) hypersurfaces \(M\) in \(\mathbb R^{n+1}\), \(n\geq 3\), which are unflat at infinity. He proves the following results: (1) If \(G\) is compact and the principal orbits are umbilical, then \(M\) is a hypersurface of revolution. (2) If the principal orbits have constant positive curvature, then again \(M\) is a hypersurface of revolution. (3) If \(n\geq 4\), \(G\) is noncompact and the principal orbits are umbilical, then (i) these orbits are isometric to \(\mathbb R^{n-k-1}\times S^k\) and, (ii) \(M\) itself is isometric to \(\mathbb R^{n-k}\times S^k\). (4) In \(\mathbb R^4\), hypersurfaces satisfying conditions of (3) do not exist.
