    The double Fourier series \[ \sum_{j\in\mathbb{Z}}\, \sum_{k\in \mathbb{Z}} c_{jk} e^{i(jx+ ky)}\tag{\(*\)} \] of a function \(f(x,y)\in L^1(\mathbb{T}^2)\), \(\mathbb{T}:= [-\pi,\pi)\), is considered. One theorem is proved: under certain Tauberian conditions of Hardy-Karamata type expressed in terms of the differences \[ \begin{gathered} \Delta_{10} c_{jk}:= c_{jk}- c_{j+1, k},\quad \Delta_{01} c_{jk}:= c_{jk}- c_{j,k+1},\\ \Delta_{11} c_{jk}:= c_{jk}- c_{j+1,k}- c_{j,k+1}+ c_{j+1,k+1},\end{gathered} \] the symmetric rectangular partial sums \(s_{mn}(f,x,y)\) of the series \((*)\) converge to \(f(x,y)\) in the metric of \(L^1(\mathbb{T}^2)\) as \(m,n\to\infty\).
