The present paper is devoted to characterizing spin pseudo-Riemannian manifolds admitting pure parallel spinors (pps) in terms of their holonomy groups. Special attention is paid to the Lorentz case. The basic technique goes back to \textit{H. B. Lawson jun.} and \textit{M.-L. Michelsohn} [Spin geometry (Princeton Mathematical Series 38, Princeton University Press) (1989; Zbl 0688.57001)]. An important ingredient of the proof is the notion of ``parallel orthogonal optical structure'', due to \textit{I. Kath} [Parallel pure spinors on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, Geometry and topology of submanifolds X, World Scientific, 87--103 (2000; Zbl 0982.53041)] by which pps are characterized in terms of the curvature tensor of the manifold. Then, the relationship with holonomy is established via the Ambrose-Singer theorem.
