The paper is devoted to the problem of scattered data interpolation on the \(d\)-dimensional sphere via zonal basis functions. The authors work in analogy with the radial basis function method suitably modifying it for the sphere. In particular, they consider spherical harmonic polynomial reproduction. In Section 2, the solvability of the interpolation problem is discussed and the variational approach to the problem is reviewed. In Section 3, the authors got global error estimates in \(L_p\), \(1 \leq p \leq \infty\). For, they use a modification of the Duchon strategy [\textit{J. Duchon}, RAIRO, Anal. Numér. 12, 325--334 (1978; Zbl 0403.41003)] which works on the sphere. This modification is described in detail in the authors' companion paper [J. Approximation Theory 129, No. 1, 28--57 (2004; Zbl 1051.41005)].
