Let \(M\) be a semifinite von Neumann algebra and \(\tau\) a semifinite faithful normal trace on \(M\). Let \(f\) be a Borel function taking the reals into the reals. The paper treats Gâteaux differentiability of the corresponding operator function defined on the self-adjoint \(\tau\)-measurable operators associated with \(M\). The function is said to be Gâteaux differentiable along \(L_p(M,\tau)\) if, whenever the direction vector belongs to the self-adjoint part of \(L_p(M,\tau)\), the difference quotients also belong to the space, their limit exists in the \(L_p\)-norm and depends linearly and continuously on the vector. Many theorems are formulated in an even more general setting of differentiability along symmetric Banach function spaces with order continuous norm. Various conditions guaranteeing such differentiability are given, for example if the function \(f\) has a continuous derivative of bounded variation, then the operator function \(f\) is differentiable along any \(L_p(M,\tau)\) with \(1<p<\infty\). The main tool is the theory of double operator integrals, introduced by the present authors together with \textit{H. Witvliet} in [J. Funct. Anal. 192, No. 1, 52--111 (2002; Zbl 1079.47502)] and developed further in the paper under review.
