A mathematical model of a single-machine infinite-bus power system is investigated. Distinct time scales are defined. Such approach provides an effective analysis of the system dynamics by means of geometric singular perturbation theory. Various singularities in the so-called slow and fast subsystems are examined. The first is the `nonhyperbolic equilibrium' which can give rise to a saddle-node bifurcation, `static' bifurcation or `fold' bifurcation. Another singular case is concerned with the collapse of the voltage of the power system, caused by infinite increasing of an eigenvalue of the linearized system matrix. The third case corresponds to a change of stability properties of the system, connected with a singularly induced bifurcation. First, an analysis is performed by means of constructing the slow manifold of the system and the singular point curve on it. Subsequent analysis is devoted to the fast dynamics. The stability region is constructed, and some numerical examples are presented.
