A quasitriangular Hopf algebra \(H\) with \(R\)-matrix \(R=R^1\otimes R^2= r^1\otimes r^2\) is called factorizable if the map \({\mathcal L}\colon H^*\to H\), \({\mathcal L}(\chi)=\chi(R^2r^1)R^1r^2\) is an isomorphism. The aim of this paper is to generalize this notion to quasi-Hopf algebras. The authors propose the appropriate generalization of the map \(\mathcal L\). The explicit formula involves the various structure maps of \(H\), such as the reassociator, and is far more complicated than the formula for a classical Hopf algebra, but it satisfies nice properties. The Drinfeld double of a finite dimensional quasi-Hopf algebra is factorizable. If \(H\) is factorizable, then we have a structure theorem for the Drinfeld double of \(H\), generalizing a similar result for classical Hopf algebras due to Schneider. Also Radford's result that a factorizable Hopf algebra is unimodular is generalized to quasi-Hopf algebras. Finally, Majid's categorical interpretation of the map \(\mathcal L\) is stated for quasi-Hopf algebras.
