All (topological) spaces considered are \(T_1\)-spaces. For a space \(X\) and an \(x\in X,\) let \({\mathcal T}_x\) be a family of subsets of \(X\) containing \(x\) such that the intersection of any two members of \({\mathcal T}_x\) is also a member of \({\mathcal T}_x.\) Recall that the collection \({\mathcal B}=\bigcup \{{\mathcal T}_x:x\in X\}\) is called a weak base for \(X\) if \(U\subseteq X\) is open iff for any \(x\in U,\) there exists \(B\in {\mathcal T}_x\) such that \(B\subseteq U.\) A space \(X\) is said to have a weak base \(g\)-function if there is a function \(g:N\times X\rightarrow 2^X\) such that for every \(x\in X\) and \(n\in N,\) \(x\in g(n,x);\) for any \(x\in X\) and \(n\in N,\) \(g(n+1,x)\subseteq g(n,x);\) and the family \(\{g(n,x):n\in N, x\in X\}\) is a weak base for \(X.\) In this article the author gives numerous metrization theorems and characterizes various kinds of generalized metric spaces in terms of weak base \(g\)-functions (as well as the better known \(g\)-functions) satisfying some conditions. In particular it is shown how the developed theory is related to recent results of \textit{J. Nagata} [Topology Appl. 91, 71--77 (1999; Zbl 0926.54019)].
