This paper describes the spectral properties of the non regular generator of the asymmetric zero-range process, via finite volume approximations, in order to characterize hitting times of subspaces with untypically large densities of particles. The eigenfunctions associated to the principal eigenvalue are shown to be solutions of a so-called Dirichlet problem on domains with prescribed boundaries. This yields a Donsker-Varadhan formula for this principal Dirichlet eigenvalue, which itself provides an asymptotic estimate for the hitting times of regions with untypical densities.
