The authors introduce on \(L^1(\mu)\) a new metric defined by \[ d(p,q) = \| p-q\| _1/\| \max (| p| , | q| )\| _1, \] which is motivated by a similar construction in the context of analysing sequence profiles of protein- or DNA-sequences. An explicit expression for the length of a geodesic relative to \(d\) is given and geodesic curves allow a simple characterization.
