An algebraic category in which the cotriple cohomology of any object vanishes in positive dimensions on injective coefficient modules is called balanced. Examples of balanced categories are groups and Lie algebras. However commutative algebras are not balanced. Crossed modules are algebraic models of connected 2-types [\textit{J.-L. Loday}, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 24, 179--202 (1982; Zbl 0491.55004)]. In this paper the author proves that the category of crossed modules in groups is non-balanced.
