A space-like surface of the 3-dimensional Minkowski space is said to be maximal iff it has vanishing mean curvature. The author derives two kinds of ''Weierstraß-Enneper'' representations for these surfaces. Thereby he describes 9 types of maximal surfaces, which, in particular, include all maximal rotation surfaces and all maximal ruled surfaces. The last two classes are richer than in Euclidean space because of the different causal character of vectors in Minkowski space.
